My boyfriend thinks I’m controlling. It hurts to hear that from the man you love, doesn’t it? It’s an insult to your character and it can send you reeling when he shares that he sees you that way. Throughout your relationship with him you may have been a bit possessive or maybe just a little overbearing but you’d never go so far as to label yourself as controlling. But your boyfriend has. You can’t ignore that he sees you that way. It’s obviously something he finds unappealing so unless you change it, it will fester and cause even more problems between the two of you.
One of the reasons that it hurts so much when you realize that your boyfriend thinks you’re controlling is it’s a criticism of your personal character. We all handle situations in life differently and for some of us, taking charge helps us to feel more balanced and satisfied. It can cause problems in relationships though. Your boyfriend may feel as though his voice isn’t being heard or that his opinion has no place. A man can begin to feel emasculated if his girlfriend is always the one making the decisions and steering the future of the relationship.
You have to learn how to better balance your need for control if you want to keep him interested in you. An important step towards doing that is recognizing why you are the way you are. For many women their desire to be in control stems from a fear of what will happen to their life if they let someone else have influence over them. To avoid that fear their overbearing nature kicks into high gear and they start to micro manage everyone around them. That’s likely what your boyfriend feels you are doing and it’s understandable why he’d feel the need to comment on your behavior.
Start today to change things but releasing some of your control. Give your boyfriend more breathing room by checking up on him less or encouraging him to spend more time with his friends. When it comes to planning dates for the two of you, leave that up to him. Also, allow him to make his own decisions regarding his life. Only add your opinion if he asks for it and even then, don’t overstep any boundaries by telling him that you’re right and he’s wrong.
If your boyfriend thinks you’re controlling don’t panic. You can easily change his opinion if you want to. Not only will you find that he’ll enjoy your company more if you’re less controlling but you’ll also feel calmer and less stressed if you try to let him take charge sometimes.
When a woman is too controlling in her relationship it can damage it forever. If you’ve done anything that has caused your man to pull back, there is a way for you to get his interest back now.
